A  MOVING  HOCKEY  PLAYER  IS  AN IMPROVING  HOCKEY  PLAYER

I watch team practices and other hockey schools and I cannot believe how much the players stand around.  At some of the practices,  I can understand as the coaches are mostly inexperienced parents volunteering to coach.  But to see what parents pay for at some of the hockey schools with the amount of standing around is just unbelievable.  One hockey school this week with a very qualified owner/instructor had about 15 students on the ice and he only used half the ice for most of his drills!  These students were waiting in line forever with half the ice being unused!  Another hockey clinic that was taking place on a small studio rink had about 15 students and the ice surface was too small for that many students,  so all the students except the two that were participating in the drill was just standing around.  And parents still pay good money for their son or daughter to attend these classes!

Our philosophy at IHC Hockey is a Moving Player is an Improving Player.  You have to keep the players focused and engaged in the drills and in the objective of the session.  Once they start standing in line for long periods of time, their mind wonders and their attention span is shot.  Ice utilization is key for productive practices and skill sessions.  Players have to perform the drill with perfect technique to break their comfort zone and to improve.  If they are not constantly moving, their comfort zone is not being challenged and therefore there will be very little or no improvement. Hockey is an anaerobic sport which means without oxygen.  Therefore, players have to practice and work on their techniques when in an anaerobic state.   Also, the coaches and instructors have to be engaged with the players to keep their attention span and enthusiasm at their highest.  Coaches and instructors have to instruct, correct, and demonstrate to get the point and the techniques across to the players.  Maybe this is the reason that IHC Hockey has been in business and helping players play at the next level longer than anyone else,  for thirty-six years.

    THE IHC PHILOSOPHY

We believe that young hockey players really don’t care what you know, until they know how much you care. While we realize that we can influence the attitudes and habits of our students both on and off the ice, we try to make this influence a very positive one. We teach all of our skills in progressive steps and put great emphasis on positive reinforcement.
